My Last Day

It has been a short 10 weeks here at RMSM. The summer here flew by, and I cannot believe that it is my last day. Even though there is not much time left, Robin managed to squeeze in one more lesson about copywriters and the process of finishing a piece. First and most importantly the client has to figure out what their target market is. With out identifying the target market, it is impossible to write anything. You must also have a good copywriter who can interview people and is knowledgeable about the subject matter.

I have really enjoyed my time here at RM, and I can sincerely say that I really enjoyed working here. Tim and Robin taught me so much that I would never have learned otherwise. I am truly grateful that allowed me to have this experience.

Portfolio

This is my is my last week here at RM. The summer has gone by so fast, and it hardly seems like I have been working here for 10 weeks.

To wrap up the work I have done here, I am starting to create a portfolio. This will include all the work I have completed such as the Midtown Dental Services eNewsletter and editorial calendars. I am going to post my portfolio on my blog as well as print one out to have during an interview. It is important to have a portfolio so you can showcase your skills and achievements to potential employers.

Personal and Company Positioning

Today in the office we were discussing the proper balance of experience and currency when positioning yourself or your company. It is important to market yourself and your company as current and up to date with technology. Because technology is changing so fast, you must stay ahead of the curve and let your clients know you are doing so.

For example, with hedge funds you don’t want to seem out dated or behind the times, so, even if your company has over 150 years of combined experience, it many not always be wise to advertise that. Even though you or your company may be using current technologies, it may not appear that way if you advertise the fact that your company is 100′s of years old. Saying that you have over 150 yeas of experience my also give off the impression that your company has a lot of employees with little experience.

The trick is to find a balance between showing that you are current and showing that you have had enough experience to get the job done well.

Search Engine Optimization

There are a few things you can do to make your website appear higher up in the search results. One of the first things you should do is to make sure your site is linked to other sites and that they are linked back to your site. You should also keep updating the context of your site. Google will pick up on the new information and push your website up in the search results. Lastly, at the very top of your website, place key words that people would use to search for your site. For example, if you were a dentist in NYC, the top of your page would say “General Dentistry & Periodontics in midtown Manhattan”. These tips will help your website get more traffic.

Resume/ Winding Down

Things are slowing down at the RM office. I guess a lot of people are taking their summer vacations! Despite the slow week, we still finished 3 newsletters and perfected my resume.

This week, Robin, Tim, and I worked on my resume. We updated it to include all that I have learned so far at RM and the FWA of NY’s Wall Street Exchange Program. My resume is now up to date and includes everything that I have learned/done this summer. Since I will be applying for jobs in the up coming year, it will be very beneficial to have a resume that shows off all of my knowledge and skill sets.

Epilepsy Caregiver Website

One of the projects I have been working on through out the summer is to decide is RM should launch an epilepsy caregiver website.

After doing a lot of research on the existing caregiver sites, it became clear that we could add a lot to to the online caregiver community. By combining all the great information from other sites, as well as our own, we could really help caregivers and supply them with information that will help them through the process.

Even though we could offer useful information to the caregiver community, there are many other factors to consider before launching the website. As I have mentioned previously, the RM office is always busy. We are totally booked until the end of September, so this would leave very little time for website management, creation and upkeep.

After reviewing the facts, my recommendation would be to put the caregiver site on hold until there is more time to devote to it. If interest is still there, the project could be picked up again at a later time.

Misc.

My newsletter (Midtown Dental Services) went out last week and got a great response! It had over a 40% open rate, and many people clicked on the links in the newsletter. To see the finished eNewsletter click HERE.

We are also working on Robin’s eNewsletter, which will go out this morning. I have a featured tip and article. To see the newsletter click HERE.

I had my 5th FWA of NY’s Wall Street Exchange Program event last night. The event was a career panel. Two of the women who spoke were Gerri Facchine and Denise Seegobin, who run the Wall Street Exchange Program. It was interesting to hear the journey these women took through corporate America, and how they finally landed a job they really love.

Creating My First e-Newsletter

As I mentioned previously, one of the assignments I was given was to create an e-Newsletter for a Dental office. I have been working on the content and the design for the past two weeks (with some help from Robin and Tim of course).

Today, we put the final touches on the newsletter, and it is finally ready to be sent out. The newsletter starts out by introducing the Dental company then goes into an article bout oral hygiene. There are also a few pictures to go along with the different articles and a side bar with a few other fun facts. Overall, I think the finished result looks really great. The newsletter is set to be released next Thursday, so hopefully I can post a link in here so you can see the finished product.
